WIN TICKETS TO THE SOLD-OUT GUS DAPPERTON GIG TOMORROW!

Gus Dapperton

We love independent musicians here at indieBerlin. And we love them, even more, when the music they put out is incredible. Gus Dapperton is a real do-it-yourself artist and is throwing out songs that are as effortlessly stylish as his looks.

Here in Berlin as part of his first European tour, Dapperton is playing Kantine am Berghain tomorrow. He teams dreamy 80s inspired pop with a retro and painfully cool image. He names David Bowie as his style icon, and I think the once-Berliner would approve of this young musician.

Dapperton’s new EP—You Think You’re a Comic!—was released this month, and consists of four chilled tracks. The beats are lazy and the synth is sweet and simple. With raw vocals over the top, it’s a pretty winning formula.

You Think You’re a Comic! backs up last year’s Yellow and Such, which featured what to me is Dapperton’s stand-out track so far. “I’m Just Snacking” would be a perfect song for a lazy afternoon in the summer sun (though we’ll have to wait a while before we can actually try that out).

All of his songs have this relaxed and light feeling, that completely belies the depth of the lyrics.

All of his songs have this relaxed and light feeling, that completely belies the depth of the lyrics. Dapperton isn’t merely a writer of pretty melodies. He’s an artist keen to experiment and see what he can really do.

In line with this, he has released two music videos (for “I’m Just Snacking”, and “Prune, You Talk Funny”). Dapperton shows as much skill for visual storytelling as he does with his music. They are slick and full of humour. If you’re anything like us, you’ll find yourself hitting the replay button more than once.

It seems like Dapperton really has everything necessary to keep rising in the world.

It seems like Dapperton really has everything necessary to keep rising in the world. “Prune, You Talk Funny” plays on his instantly recognizable bowl-cut hair. This self-awareness added on to his creative force should allow him to grab more and more attention as time goes on.

Though just 20 years old just now, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why Gus Dapperton will be a name you hear a lot in the future. He might even come to be someone else’s style icon one day.
