Danish band Turquoise Sun has been walking listeners through their surfy psych-pop drenched world since they got together in 2015…They’ve been likened to Tame Impala, Animal Collective and The War on Drugs.
After their debut EP hit top spot in the P3 Barometer Alternative Hitlist they went on to be featured by skate mag Thrasher Magazine, while VICELAND USA used two songs for international broadcast in the USA, Canada and Australia. Their 3rd single off the album became the third most played single on national radio station P6 Beat. With colourful and energetic live shows they’ve been wowing audiences around Europe and we’re happy to have them play at indieBerlin’s Basement Bash on October 25th.

indieberlin: How did you get together as a band?
Frederik: We all grew up in the same town, except Johan our bass player who joined the band a couple of years ago now. Most of us have known each other since we were kids, Simon and I have been friends since we were 12. In our late teens we all thought it would be a sick idea to make a band and jam, but only a few of us could actually play an instrument. So, we basically started making songs while learning how to even play. It was absolute shit in the beginning haha, but we had fun and a lot of ambitions, so we kept at it. In 2013 we changed our name, bought new equipment and started writing completely different stuff, what we today call Turquoise Sun. It was kinda like falling in love again, this new identity gave us the possibility to start fresh and do anything we wanted.
indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you / in your band?
Simon: Usually one or two of us bring a main idea to the rest of the band. And then it’s an ongoing process with new ideas being added, parts being taken out, different roles or different sounds on the guitars and keyboards. We don’t have any songs, I think, that we have all agreed is done. Even tunes we’ve been playing for years, sometimes get adjusted a bit with an effect or some little detail. But then, of course, we have to agree on some final result when we’re taping and releasing tracks.
indieberlin: If your music was a movie, which genre would it be in?
Frederik: We’ve actually written a song inspired by Stanley Kubricks style of making movies. Generally I’d say a 80’s VHS movie you found in your dads loft, SCI-FI.
Simon: If not, then probably commercials.
indieberlin: Tell us a secret about yourself.
Simon: Haha well, then it wouldn’t be a secret!
indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Frederik: Tyler the Creators newest album is amazing. I’ve been listening to that over and over, so many awesome moments. But generally the Danish underground scene these years is really booming, I’m quite inspired by our peers and friends work.
indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?
Johan: Follow me on Spotify for the greatest, hottest top 10 hits right now.
Kasper: Simon actually prepares a really cool music quiz for each tour, its fucking good. You have a topic, for example Geography. Simon plays a song that’s related to Geography in the band name, song lyrics, title or album name, and the first one to raise their hand get a chance to guess it..! For example, ‘Paris to Berlin’ or ‘Sweet home Alabama’. It’s also an amazing drinking game haha!
indieberlin: What was the last concert you went to?
Johan: Frederik and I went to see Iceage last month on this little dusty venue in Aarhus. I love punk concerts – it’s very different from what you experience anywhere else. The energy, the people, the bruises…
indieberlin: How do you feel about covering a song?
Andreas: We’ve actually been working on a cover with “The Beatles”. I think the concept of cover is nice, if you bring something different to the song. If you can recognise an original sound in the cover. For example the track “Baby” with Ariel Pink is a cover I very much like, because he take his sound into it. It’s originally written and performed Donnie and Joe Emerson in ´79. You learn so much from playin’ around with covers.
indieberlin: How do you think the audience in Berlin is different to the audience at home?
Frederik: Berlin is an amazing city, one of the cities I’ve visited most in Europe and actually considered moving here recently. The music scene is so vibrant and our experience with the audiences have only been good! We’re back for the second time this year with the Basement Bash show. It’s gonna be so fun. We’re really hyped on building our audiences here. We’re already playing for a spring show for 2019!
