Dennis Lloyd in indieBerlin interview

indieBerlin-presents-Dennis-Lloyd

From Tel Aviv, Dennis Lloyd is a singer, producer, songwriter – and trumpeter  – whose snappy songs, soulful voice and fresh approach has made him one of the breakout artists of 2017.

In 2015 after his first release making some headway he took the unusual step of moving to Bangkok for year to work on new music. It paid off – Dennis’s last release saw his music being included in various viral Spotify playlists and his various singles hovering around the half-million-play mark on youtube.

And yet in Germany he’s still a newcomer, a fresh face. indieBerlin is excited to be able to present the debut showcase concert of Dennis Lloyd in Kantine im Berghain on the 18th September. We talked to Dennis and asked him some questions.

indieberlin: Tell us a little bit about your musical background

Dennis Lloyd: I started playing the trumpet when I was 8, I played a lot of classical music. When I was 13 my parents bought a guitar (for my sister) and I started playing & writing songs. In high school I studied Jazz music for 4 years.

indieberlin: Tell us something about yourself that you always wanted to say but no one has ever asked you yet.

Dennis Lloyd: My biggest love is for the ocean, especially diving. It keeps me calm and helps me release anxiety.

indieberlin: How does the songwriting process work for you?

Dennis Lloyd: I divide this process into three stages-
1.Beat
2.Harmony
3.Melody
If I like any of these stages I move forward, sometimes I just have to let go of it. In general, I try not to push too much, sometimes the best way to make music is to do everything except making music.

indieberlin: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Dennis Lloyd: I’m usually writing about true stories, real people and bad feelings.

indieberlin: What music do you listen to when you’re touring?

Dennis Lloyd: Tough question, I guess it depends on the mood. Recently I’ve been listening to Herencia de Timbiqui , Jacob Banks and Allan Rayman.

indieberlin: What was the nicest compliment you once got?

Dennis Lloyd: People told me that my music helped them through difficult times in their lives- for me, this is one of the main reasons why I make music.

indieberlin: Do you prefer to play big festivals / stages or smaller club gigs?

Dennis Lloyd: I love the smaller club gigs, when you’re super close to the audience and you can literally feel them.

Dennis Lloyd is live in Kantine am Berghain on 18th September. indieBerlin is proud to be media partner for the event.
