indieberlin chats to new Berlin band Up about their take on life and their upcoming EP
The Up band are playing tonight in Bassy as part of the Rockt Inferno Band Contest – check them out!
IB How would you explain your music to a deaf person?
UP It’s like eating a food which has once been your favourite… you still like it but you can’t find it in the nearest shops. Basically we are searching the path which would connect our egos with the outer world. 😉
IB What questions are you most often asked in interviews?
UP Are you on Facebook? (yes, we are)
IB What is your vision for the band, if you have one?
UP It’s rather simple: stylistically and musically we feel somehow connected to the 60s and 70s although we are not trying to reproduce or copy the past and we do consider ourselves a modern band. It’s more about that naive feeling of playing music each time as if it was the first time. Perceiving music as an unexplored territory where one needs to be ready to face both miracles and dragons any time. It’s also about a personal sensation of the simultaneous absurdity and sudden harmony of the connection between inner and outer world. The only message we possibly are trying to translate is: whatever you do, do it honestly, no simulacra allowed 😉
IB With which other bands would you like to go on tour or to play together with?
UP Send us back in time and the choice will be easier – The Who, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix etc. From today’s bands – Arcade Fire, The Raconteurs or the like.
IB How do you write your songs?
UP Kirill brings most of the song ideas. However the final versions are the result of a band work. Arrangements, sound effects etc. – all is being developed during rehearsals.
IB Which band would you like to interview if you could?
UP A person: Peter Gabriel
IB What is music to you?
UP On one hand it’s a mixture of sex, love and the most obsessive drugs, on the other it’s a some kind of an inner need of orderly expression.
IB Tell us something about your new release and when we can see you play live?
UP At the moment we are working on our first EP. I hope it will be finished by the end of October. It will comprise of 6-7 songs which as we think are giving the best idea of our music. All songs will be available in Internet. The EP forestalls the album which is to be announced additionally. Our hope is that the album will be released in early spring. As for the gigs: we’ve been focused on the recording for the last 2 months and therefore haven’t played live for a while. However, now when the recording is mostly done we plan to start gigging as much as we can. All gig dates are could be found at our facebook page.
