Last Wednesday evening, I stumbled down a rabbit hole into a wonderland called Grüner Salon where talented Tasmanian-born songwriter, singer, saxophonist and pianist Dan Freeman and his band “The Serious” were filling the room with a blend of indie-rock, pop and experimental sounds.
The band’s two permanent members are certifiable rockstars – Welchez is a compelling front man and guitarist Charles Rowell attacks both his instrument and the stage with real presence. The songs, while retaining a foggy darkness typical of the genre, tend toward the anthemic rather than the cynical. There are big sing along choruses aplenty, and the crowd obliged heartily.
Compositions of wonky grooves and enchanting melodies. A mixture of different styles that results in a cinematic sound and surreal atmospheric textures.

The Obits are an indie band out of Brooklyn, New York. Formed in 2006 from the remnants of a few already established acts (Shortstack, Edsel, Hot Snakes) the band came about from musicians with an urge to jam without any great plans for where it might lead. The chemistry obviously worked and they played an off-the-cuff gig at influential New York hotspot The Cake Shop. A bootleg recording circulated on the internet, got heard by Subpop A&R man Chris Jacobs, and after being invited to play at Subpop’s twentieth anniversary party, they were duly signed to the label.
Donna Summer was one of the greats. Together with producer Giorgio Moroder she defined disco and with her hit “I Feel Love” defined electronic music for the eighties generation – directly inspiring the slew of 80s electronica bands that came afterwards. She also became a huge gay icon – even though some remarks she made after later becoming a born-again Christian got her into trouble with the gay community some time later.

Hannigan has one of the most impressive voices I have heard in a long time, I wish I could catch it in a little box and take it out when days are grey and lonely. It’s special. Husky restraint with a wild range, unexpected Jazz twists and turns and a timbre I can’t not compare to Melanie Safka’s.
This Tuesday 8th May Noel Maurice is performing in King Kong Klub. Billed as a release party for his Berlin Diaries. Introduction album, he’s got new songs and a new setup, pushing in the electro indiefolk/ tripfolk direction and leaving the conventional band structure alone for the moment, mixing live loops with guitar and voice, together with Stewart Hill. Also on the bill is Hungarian producer of exquisite melodies and heavy-duty off-kilter beats Dnte. We’re giving away 2×2 guest list passes and 2 of Noel’s album to the first people to write to us at indieberlin indieplattform (yes, that’s 2 t’s, don’t ask).
Last wednesday the Dublin trio The Minutes surprised patrons at the Comet Club in Kreuzberg.
After a rather disappointing support act from “the Leash”, The Minutes performed effortlessly and blemish-free. Demonstrating their expert knowledge of the German language with a passionate “dankedankedankedanke”, they merrily cursed the crowd and spat on the stage.
The Blood Red Shoes are a two piece made up of guitar and drums. They plow the alternative rock furrow with strangely poignant vocals, catchy melodies and a bit of the old soft-to-loud thing.
