Gig Review – Red Ink and Noel Maurice live at indieberlin @ Neue Kammerspiele in Kleinmachnow

Last night at the “indieberlin @ neue kammerspiele” venue in Kleinmachnow we had the pleasure to experience Australian indierock band Red Ink and Berlin indiefolk artist Noel Maurice. On what was the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures in the mid 30s the evening started off with grilling and caipi’s in the cafe outside where we watched the sun sink down and the heat cool to the pleasant side of bloody hot and Noel Maurice kicked off the musical entertainment aspect of the evening with an acoustic session on the pavement, playing a cross section of pop and folk classics with a smile and a couple of jokes.

indieberlin recommends // June shows:

Living in Berlin, there is always an intimidating list of shows to attend. The seemingly endless possibilities make it insanely hard to choose one thing to decide on for a night out, but we decided to help you out. These are a few of the shows we recommend you attend over the next week. Enjoy!

Coming up // Molly Nilsson The Travels Release Party

Berlin-based synth pop artist Molly Nilsson has released the first song from her upcoming album, The Travels. If you’re not familiar with this Swedish songstress, she creates her own personal blend of bewitching dance pop and eerie ‘power ballads’.

Album Review // Still Corners: Strange Pleasures

If dream pop could be summed up into one album alone, it could quite possibly be the most recent creation of musical duo, Still Corners. Strange Pleasures is a refined sound, somewhat clearer than previous musings. Weaving melodic harmonies, airy vocals and sun-kissed instrumentals; it’s an album that immediately makes you think of biking down the street with wind blowing in your hair and sun glistening onto your face, or warm nights drinking beer as the sun sets above you. Luscious reverb creates this nostalgic feeling, drifting you into a fantasy world of musical bliss.

Jagwar Ma New Album Howling Out on the 21st

agwar Ma, the duo Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield, first bonded in Sydney, Australia over a mutual passion of melody and experimental beats, setting out to create a sound that would capture their love for contemporary electronica & classic American pop harmony, Joe Meek & King Tubby, vintage drum machines & radio frequency manipulation, Ray Davies’ vintage amp noise and improvised percussion.

indieberlin’s Noel Maurice plays support for Red Ink on the 19th June

Noel Maurice: Tricky/Dylan/Waits. Indiefolk and Antipop.

„Cool, stylish“ – 030Berlin „Hitverdächtig“ – Zitty „Klassischer Rockpop“ – Intro
„Standing on the street corner howling the blues until the butler comes.“

Noel Maurice is an old face on the Berlin music scene. After being involved in the early setting up of internationally renowned arthouse Tacheles, he has ploughed his indiefolk furrow since sometime in the 90s through the clubs and bars of Berlin and its environs – while playing the odd gig back in the UK too – Noel has watched from street level as Berlin changed around him, and his songs tell the story: The story of his path through the wild and alcoholic squat days of the 90s to the zeroes and the questions that arise from the aftermath and watching as some people didn’t make it back from the edge.

Show review // Kakkmaddafakka

Last Thursday, Norweigan band Kakkmaddafakka played at Privatclub. I was not familiar with them, and quickly realized that knowing their music was not a prerequisite to thoroughly enjoying myself. The colored lights blinked wildly, with the drummer offering a solid beat to carry the rest of the band on stage, dancing in party mode. After hyping up the crowd, they began with a song called ‘Touching’. They then exclaimed that they would be showing us a lot of their “new shit”, as they are close to releasing a new album. It seemed too easy to pick out some of their influences; Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, the Strokes, Fun.- all mixed in with funk, R&B, disco, reggae, and pop.

indieberlin Interview: Red Ink // win 1×2 tickets for their gig on the 19.06.

Red Ink are the brilliantly energetic indie rock band out of Australia that has been wowing audiences across the US and Europe over the last months, most recently getting everyone dancing at Carrera Klub in Berlin – now indieberlin has the pleasure to present them live at indieberlin @ Neue Kammerspiele on the 19th June. We caught up with them after their successful Carrera Klub gig and asked them about German girls, falling drummers and small towns.

Want to get in free to the Red Ink gig on the 19th June? Just like our Facebook page indieberlin @ Neue Kammerspiele and you’re in with a chance!

Ib: what bands do you get compared to? People tell us alot of things.. They think we sound a little bit like The Killers, or Phoenix.. and that we look like Midnight Oil or INXS.. We just think we look/sound like Red Ink

indieberlin Live Review – Ghost Capsules in Bi Nuu

Last Saturday in Bi Nuu, Vienna based band Ghost Capsules and its front singer Laura Gomez glamoured a sparse crowd with the efficiency of a one night stand. Sexy, mysterious and straight to the point. Quick witchcraft lesson.

Having a bad hair day, I decide to show up wearing a wooly hat. With all due respect, the hair statement of our host totally allows me to drop it off – thank God, it seems that we are going to
sweat tonight. A Robert Smith-y hair cut overhanging a dark silhouette, parelmour pumps and a
mysterious satchel around her neck : Miss Tick gets our whole attention.

Meet the team – dieses Mal stellen wir euch Norman Zielasko vor: Master of our mix tapes!

“Depeche Mode”, “The Cure” und “Built to Spill” gebracht haben.

Show review // The XX Night + Day at Spreepark

Last Saturday, The xx played in the trippy abandoned amusement park Spreewald. They brought along some of their friends and favorite artists: Jessie Ware, Chromatics, Mount Kimbie, Kindness, and Mykki Blanco. The mini-festival took place all day and evening, and although rain prevented many from coming for the entire day, when The xx came on to finish the show the park was packed.

Here you go:

Coming up // CocoRosie at Huxleys Neue Welt

Wow! If you have managed to get tickets to this gig you will no doubt be in for a magical night. Formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca and Sierra, CocoRosie have since toured pretty much the entire globe and enamored audiences everywhere with their other-worldy look and sound. Poetic and artistic, yet, cutting edge and raw, the pair effortlessly weave elements of pop, folk, hip hop, blues, opera, into beautiful pop songs, which often deal with intensely dark subject matter.
