We live in an age where independent bands are becoming the norm. The road to releasing an album begins with crowd-sourcing funds. A record can be recorded in your bedroom and released to the world through the wonders of the interwebs. It’s a fine approach for a band or a solo artist layering different instruments. Cam Butler decided he wanted to write an orchestra piece.
Acclaimed Melbourne based guitarist and composer Cam Butler will be playing a very special concert at Widerstands Museum on Saturday October 13. Cam released his new album, Save My Soul, in Australia earlier in 2012 before his Beijing and Berlin launches. Save My Soul is a breathtaking piece of work featuring a 23-piece string orchestra, guitars and percussion. Cam commissioned four directors (hailing from Melbourne, Berlin and Kabul) to make a video for each track on the album. This concert will be a special video installation, with Cam playing solo electric guitar to accompany the videos for Save My Soul and the album’s lush orchestral backing music. “They came across the song and they liked it and it fitted the theme of the film. So they put it in there,” Köster says. “At the premiere of the film we played a gig before the film so people noticed. We told them to listen out for the song. It was cool to contribute to a different kind of media. It’s in a totally different context. Usually music is a stand alone thing, unless you have a video out. But in this context all of a sudden the lyrics make a different sense. Normally it’s about the rhythm or something so people can dance but in this case it was more about the subject of the film, which is a serious subject.”

Monday night I found myself heading down to Berghain Kantine where I’d agreed to meet up with Rosi Golan for a chat before her gig there. In case the name Rosi Golan doesn’t say much to you, Rosi – who’s from Israel, spent a part of her childhood in Germany, and then became a native of LA before moving to New York where she’s lived for the last years – has released two albums so far. What lifts her way above her contemporaries here is that more than half of the songs from these two albums have been used as soundtracks for the poignant bits in a number of famous TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries, as well as being used in lots of well-known commercials that I can’t be bothered to rattle off here.

I listened to their soundcheck for ten minutes, enjoying it despite my craving for a coffee, and when they left the stage I followed them back to the backstage. Which I have to say was pretty damn tiny. She was chatting to a man who turned out to be her manager when I introduced myself. The manager was one of those Americans that make you feel bad for pre-judging Americans – I know, one shouldn’t, but it’s hard not to sometimes – in that he was a thoroughly nice guy, welcoming and extending every courtesy and doing everything he could to make me feel at home. After which he cemnted our friendship by granting me access to their coffee stash and with a big strong coffee I was back in feeling-human mode and at last the interview could begin.
Die Band Efterklang ist einfach nicht zu fassen. Alle paar Jahre bringen Sie ein unfassbar gutes Album auf dem Markt und hinterlassen den Hörer mit mehreren Ohrwürmern im Gehörgang. Nach dem tollen Album “Magic Chairs” von 2010 erschien nun vor wenigen Tagen das neue Album “Piramida”. Die Ideen für das Album haben Casper Clausen (Gesang), Rasmus Stolberg (Bass) und Mads Christian Brauer (andere Instrumente) bei einem Kurzbesuch auf Spitzbergen gefunden und dann im eigenen Studio in Berlin zusammengefügt. Der Ausflug hat sich gelohnt, denn die Band klingt so gut wie nie und die Reduziertheit steht den neuen Stücken sehr gut, denn das ganze Album lässt sich perfekt in einem durchhören.

If music still keeps coming to life in me and I feel like passing it on a band is a good vehicle. But I try not to pin too much identity to the band or the band name. To me it’s a constant process of making new music with new people or sometimes with no people when you’re alone in a new city or a new country. The name of the band could maybe serve as a reminder to folks out there. “Oh, I saw that band in 2008. They were great, they’re back. Let’s go check them out at the club tonight” If it wasn’t for that very pragmatic purpose maybe I’d keep changing names more often for different projects or processes. Especially since some people get extremely confused and sometimes almost provoked that my artistic expression can be stylistically quite diverse from time to time.
The pace of music usually mimics the speed of the culture it inhabits. In an age where time seems to be constantly at a premium, it is refreshing to see someone tear up the rulebook and fix their colours firmly to the mast of meandering music utterly unconcerned with our need for instant gratification.
Einar Stray, a twenty-two year old from Olo who began his three-week European tour here in Berlin, does just that. With a band expertly combining the sounds of the piano, guitar, viola, violin and drums, coupled with a smattering of other instruments, his songs truly manage to fill the room with a sound far greater than the sum of their five parts. Although comparisons to the Iceland gods of post-rock Sigur Ros are both inaccurate and at this stage generous, it is understandable why they have been made, since it is difficult to think of anyone else who comes close to attempting the music they are doing.

Dan Deacon’s follow up to the widely acclaimed Bromst is a varied record. From the challenging and abrasive opener to the more landscape inspired sonic ventures later in the record, it covers nearly as much ground as the vast land it derives its title: America. What’s apparent from even just the title is that there’s a statement Deacon is making with this record. Not a concept record as such, but more a meditation on contemporary American life.

1. How would you explain your music to a deaf person?
I play electric guitar and sing, Steffen plays drums, Nikola plays keyboards, samples and bass on the keyboard. The music is a mixture of folk, rock, electronic elements, pop and punk. Live it sounds more rocky and powerful than people expect! It´s dreamy and powerful. Soothing and relaxing.
