As everyone knows, the Berlinale is coming to town. From the 6th to the 16th February the international film festival is going down, and each year more and more A-listers pop by as the festival grows in internationl importance. All well and good. But what is for us more interesting and more is something a little smaller and a little more special that’s going down within the same timeframe, and that is the Berlin Independent Film Festival.

Madlick are a female Berlin-based electro duo that get hard and heavy with the greatest of relish. And they seem to be going places too. They’ve been featured and interviewed recently on FluxFM and in 2013 they opened Yoko Ono’s Berlin concert, they collaborated with Peaches and recorded her in their studio, FAZ listed one of their songs as a top ten summer hit, and they were chosen to open the Interfilm festival at the Volksbuhne. Check out their video and see if you can get down to White Trash tomorrow to check them out.

Caudal gives us kraut math rock from space. We give you the tickets to get there.

If, unititated into the mysteries of space/kraut/mathrock as I am, you may well ask just what the hell that is. If I could help you with that I would, but I too am none the wiser. This would be only the first reason to get down there and see just what the hell this infernal trio are up to. The second of what must surely be a score of other reasons, if I had long enough to think them all up, is that Cranky Booking always delivers bands that pass their strict lithmus test of originality and spunk. The third of these myriad reasons is that we’re giving away a pair of tickets to do just that.

Cured Meat author Polly Trope gives us Inebriated Philosphers, a short story about the nighttime hours

So they were a couple, and they were alcoholics. I was an alcoholic too, so we all made friends. We lived on a flying rug and the spirits would come out of the bottle for us every night.
There seemed to be no exit from the night, only erratic loops or, sometimes, neat circles. All the lights shone inwardly, towards a bright center, as if the night was a volcano. Appropriately so, because the heavier I was soaked in vodkas, the more inwardly turned I found my own feelings. And yet there were streams and streams of faces, fiercely battling the fading sensation with glitter make-up, killer heels and loud music.

ARIONCE

indieberlin talks to Angel Olsen on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in the Michelberger Hotel

My short and cosy interview with Angel Olsen at the Michelberger Hotel on a moody Tuesday evening left many topics uncovered. Due to flight delays and a busy schedule, Angel only just arrived in Berlin from Paris and already found herself in a cloud of interviews and photo-shoots. Good thing she manages to keep a level head and sense of humour.

With her textured, vintage sound, her music is infused with melancholy. Today it really suits the weather. With her new album “Burn Your For No Witness” she is breaking new ground with her powerful songwriting and intricate melodies. Expect her back in Berlin at HAU1 on March 29th!
