Berlin Feminist Film Week 2016 with the Mobile Kino starting today

Berlin Feminist Film Week

It is no coincidence that this year’s Berlin Feminist Film Week begins on the 8th of March; it is international woman’s day, a day of appreciation for females across the globe. Featuring films that have only been directed by women, and which star women in active roles, the festival is an attempt to show the work of the underrepresented in an industry dominated by males.

Key themes of the Berlin Feminist Film Week 2016 will include body positivism, sexuality, activism and lesbian representation in film

Launched in 2014, the festival’s aim was to increase the visibility of women, femininities and people of colour within the film industry. By no means do they intend to exclude men, but to provide a space for those who do not normally get the attention they deserve. Hosting a number of films and related discussions across various venues in Berlin, key themes of the event will include body positivism, sexuality, activism and lesbian representation in film.

Highlights include Wednesday night’s screenings, aptly named “Body Positive – My body is my temple,” which will take place at Moviemento. Seven short films will be screened, all of which involve a discourse between the female body and power. As with most of the screenings, the films will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and other feminist activists, who will be present to answer audience questions.

Other non-film events include a comedy breakfast at Alaska, and a party at Acud on Friday night

Thursday night will expand on the Berlin Feminist Film Week’s desire to represent queer directors who challenge discourses about gender roles, with a screening of the feature film While You Weren’t Looking, by Catherine Stewart. Set in South Africa, the film sets to examine Cape Town through the lives of a queer community. Again, the screening will be followed by a discussion of the night’s topics, specifically lesbian representation in cinema.

Other non-film events include a comedy breakfast at Alaska, and a party at Acud on Friday night. See the website for tickets and for more information on venues.
