Short and snappy: British Shorts is back!
From 17th-20th of January 2014 the 7th Lichtspielklub short film festival, British Shorts, will spoil its viewers rotten with British and Irish short film – from comedy,
drama, animation, thriller, documentaries, horror, experimental and music videos to a short film retrospective of the British independent film production company Warp Films (Four Lions, This is England, Submarine). Screenings take place at Sputnik Kino (Kreuzberg), Ballhaus Ost (Prenzlauer Berg) and Filmkunst 66 (Charlottenburg).
British Shorts –now an established entity in the Berlin film festival calendar – has presented many international, world and national film premieres in its seven-year history, acquiring a reputation as an interesting platform for short films from Britain and Ireland.
Internationally well-known names – including Rhys Ifans (Anonymous), Daniel Craig (007), Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) and James Corden (Lesbian Vampire Killers) – meet boisterous new blood and film students. Big budget meets low-budget meets no-budget. Other well known names include Mike Skinner (singer of The Streets) with his directorial debut, Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur), Alice Lowe (Sightseers), Ben Whishaw (Q in 007 Skyfall, main character in The Hour), Julian Barret (the Mighty Boosh-star with directorial work), and many more.
Besides numerous screenings the extensive festival programme is enhanced with several live concerts (The Burning Hell, Slow Steve, Berlin Pop Ensemble and more tba), parties, a free festival workshop, including a 48-hour film project with lecturers from Britain, talks with filmmakers, an exhibition and the infamous British Shorts festival bar. For the third year in a row there will be a jury award and an audience award.
